Perspectives on Nationalism

Grade 11 Social Studies is dedicated to learning about nationalism through an evaluation of historical examples and reflection of modern times. We will learn about the various origins and factors that lead to nationalism, ultranationalism and internationalism. In addition, we will analyze the necessity of nationalism today, and the various impacts it can have on modern society.

Course Outline

Unit 1: Nationalism and Identity

What is the most effective way for society to impact individual/collective identity?

Unit 1 explores the ways in which nationalism develops as a form of identity and what identity, nation, and nationalism is to begin with. How do we begin to see ourselves as belonging to certain groups, how is that membership and pride expressed? And what happens when there is a conflict of interests between the many ways in which we identify?​

Unit 2: Ultranationalism

To what extent should ultranationalism be supported?

Unit 2 looks at the extreme form of nationalism - Ultranationalism, and the role this ideology had in World War I and II, and the extent that it is associated to crimes against humanity, such as genocide. We will take a critical look and evaluate the conditions under which ultranationalim thrives and the effects it has had and can have one history.

Unit 3: Internationalism

To what extent should internationalism be pursued?

Unit 3 considers the complex realm of international affairs by inquiring into the various factors and impacts of foreign policies and supranational organizations. Ultimately, the question of whether the collective benefit of international community should outweigh the individual, national interests will be taken up and critically assessed. To better appreciate the complicated world of internationalism, a class simulation will be used to enrich the learning process.

Unit 4: Canadian Nationalism

To what extent should all Canadians embrace a singular identity?

Unit 4 returns to the concept of identity by focusing on our national identity. Does Canada have a singular unified national identity, should we? By exploring both historical and contemporary complexities, we will enlarge our connection to our past and envision our future as a pluralistic and multicultural, multi-nation state.
