Social Studies 9

Canada: Opportunities and Challenges

Grade 9 Social Studies is dedicated to the study of issues that affect Canadians Political, Economically, and Socially. Beginning with a survey into the political processes of the country, students will appreciate and critically evaluate the system of governance of the country; followed by an analysis of economic systems and its impacts on quality of life measures. Finally, students will have the opportunity to tie it all together by considering the social impacts government decision making has on citizens everyday.

Unit 1: Federal Political System

To what extent can we influence the Federal government?

Unit 1 explores the political system of Canada and the various ways it tries to represent, protect and serve the people of Canada. How well does our federal system represent the people of Canada? What are the ways in which we can get laws that reflect our needs to become in effect?

Unit 2: Individual and Collective Rights

To what extent does the Charter of Rights and Freedoms protect our rights well?

Unit 2 takes a critical look at the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and seeks to give us a basic understanding of the rights and freedoms that are enjoyed in Canada. We will also look at how well these rights and freedoms are protected under the Charter.

Unit 3: Justice System

To what extent do we live in a just society?

Unit 3 considers the notions of justice and the system of law and law enforcement that apply and protects young offenders. What is justice? What rights and procedures are there around crime? A discussion around the model of justice and what counts as a true and effective "punishment" to ensure the safety of society and reflect our values.

Unit 4: Immigration

To what extent should Canada welcome immigration?

Unit 4 deconstructs the issue of immigration. What is immigration? what is Canada's policies and rules about immigration? Do we, should we, welcome immigrants to our country? We will consider what are some of the challenges of the people who wish to come to this country, and analyze to what extent Canada should make it easy or difficult for people to come move here.
